Spotting Old and New in the High Street with Year 1

Year 1 used their super detective skills when they went for a walk along Station Road for their History topic ‘Shops and Toys from the Past’. The children were very observant. They pointed out some clues which showed which shops were older and compared these with some of the more modern-day shops. They spotted ‘Robins’, ‘Shaws’ and ‘Wilsons’ and thought they may be named after the families that first owned them. A couple of children spotted dates on the shop fronts which indicated when the shops may have first started. The class observed that ‘Shaws’ had provisions on display outside which is what some older style shop had. Children also spotted that outside ‘Tesco’ there was a modern traffic light system signalling green for customers in and red for customers to wait outside.

This is what some of the pupils had to say:

Elise – “Old shops have the name of the owner and they don’t have fancy lights.”

Isabel – “I liked the new shops which have delicious things in the window.”

Charlie – “The old fashioned shops are bigger than the new shops.”

Clementine – “I noticed that all of the old shops had dates on them.”

Stella – “The old shops had the food at the front.”

Kenan – “I liked the new shops because they looked very shiny.”

Grace – “I noticed that one of the shops had lots of black and brown on the front.”

Aryaan – “In the arcade are lots of shops.”

Lucia – “I liked the decorations in the new shops.”
