In Years 1 and 2 children build on their Foundation Stage skills and follow an exciting and challenging curriculum in which most lessons are taught by the class teacher. These include English (literacy), Maths (numeracy), Humanities and Science. In addition there are specialist teachers for a number of subjects including French, ICT, PE, Music and Drama.
Classes have up to around 16 pupils and there is a learning support assistant and a teacher in each class. The transition from Reception Class to Year 1 is an exciting time for children and the teachers work together closely to ensure a smooth passage.
In the Summer Term of Reception the children have a Year 1 moving up day so that they can spend time with their new teacher and in their new classroom. Parents also have the opportunity to meet the teacher and see the classroom.
The pupils follow a broad and interesting curriculum that reflects the national strategies, with a focus on English, reading and maths skills in the mornings. There are weekly homework activities including reading, spellings and number work, as well as preparation for ‘big writing’ on Fridays.
